New Product Review: Is the Kitchen Safe safe?

You know me, I’m always on the lookout for food news, toys and products to share. This one crossed my path and I had to toss in my two cents. The Kitchen Safe is a “simple tool that makes self control fun.” Basically it’s what you think it is, a safe for your eats. There is a lock that you set with a dial so it can’t be opened until the exact moment you’ve set it to. The idea is that you can put your cheetos, brownies, kid’s electronics and any crap you feel “guilty” about into the box and no matter how much you bash, pry or kick it, you can’t release your goods. If this sounds like you something you may be into, here’s 4 reasons why it’s not for you:

It’s not for you if  you want to have a good relationship with food. This bin will just reinforce that there are “angel” and “devil” foods. It will intensify your deep rooted feelings that you are weak and unable to control yourself if there is a box of Girl Scout cookies in your apartment.

It is also not for you if  you live in Manhattan. Who has space for more clutter?

It is also not for you if  you would like to become a healthier eater. Its like a big lighthouse focusing on the “can’t” (eat the junk), rather than the “can” (indulge in the berries, salsa, or  spiced chips). When you’re thinking about the negative, you lose out on the chance to empower yourself, and are more likely to fail, rather than succeed.

This is not for you if  you believe in conscious indulgences, like I do. A conscious indulgence is something you enjoy for sheer pleasure. It’s planned. It’s deliberate. It’s wanted. It’s enjoyed. Maybe you look forward to your ounce of dark chocolate after dinner. A small popcorn at the movies can do the trick. The glass of wine you’re going to have on your Friday night date. All conscious. A word of advice: if you don’t buy it, you won’t eat it. Don’t buy the bucket of ice cream at Costco. When you really want an ice cream, go to Emack and Bolios for a conscious indulgence cone.

OK, I may sound harsh, but I actually can think of one reason the Kitchen Safe may work for you. I’m thinking I’d let you give it a try if you were a sleepwalking night eater and feared you’d eat the cookies you made for the bake sale unknowingly. For the rest of you, this safe ain’t a safe for your home.
